Long before global trade routes were mapped and maritime charts were drawn, the lush, rain-fed hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala were already whispering their aromas to the world — carried by monsoon winds, forest air, and the quiet rhythm of nature.Pepper vines climbed ancient trees that had stood for centuries, cardamom thrived beneath the cool, shaded canopies of dense forests, and turmeric roots ripened slowly beneath layers of rich, mineral-filled tropical soil. These spices were not merely crops — they were a way of life, deeply rooted in the land and the people who cultivated them with patience and care.
For centuries, the Malabar coast of Kerala was the beating heart of the global spice trade. Merchants, explorers and farmers carried the aromas of pepper, cardamom and turmeric across oceans — long before the world had mapped its horizons.
The story of GAMA & CO begins in this same landscape.
In the misty slopes of the Western Ghats, where rainfall is generous and the soil is ancient, spices have been cultivated with patience and knowledge passed down through generations.
We are not a brand born of trend or convenience.
We are a company rooted in origin — in the forests, the farmers and the centuries of spice heritage that define Kerala’s identity.
Inspired by the legacy of visionary Malabar traders such as Chovvakkaran Moosa and leaders like Velu Thampi Dalawa who protected the region’s commerce and culture, GAMA & CO was founded on a simple belief:
The finest spices in the world come from respecting the land and the people who cultivate it.
Rekindle the world’s connection to the true origins of spice—restoring Kerala’s historic role as a meeting place of cultures, trade, and flavour, and carrying that legacy forward with integrity for generations to come.
Gama & Co. 1498 sources and shares authentic spices from Kerala, shaped by lush landscapes, monsoon rains, and a centuries-old spice-route legacy. Guided by purity, true provenance, and responsible care, we bring enduring flavour, cultural depth, and honest natural benefits through nature-friendly growing—carrying a vintage heritage into today.
For centuries, the Malabar coast of Kerala stood at the center of the global spice trade — a region where the value of pepper, cardamom, and turmeric drew merchants, explorers, and kingdoms from across the world. Long before modern trade routes were defined, these spices travelled vast oceans, shaping cuisines, cultures, and economies far beyond their place of origin.
The story of GAMA & CO 1498 begins in this very landscape.
In the mist-covered slopes of the Western Ghats, where fertile soil and abundant rainfall create the perfect conditions for cultivation, spices have been grown with care, patience, and generational knowledge. Here, farming is not just a practice, but a tradition — one that has been preserved and refined over centuries.
GAMA & CO 1498 is not a brand built on trends or short-term demand.
It is rooted in origin — in the land, the farmers, and the deep heritage that defines Kerala’s identity as one of the world’s most celebrated spice regions. Every step, from cultivation to sourcing, reflects a commitment to preserving this legacy with authenticity and integrity.
Inspired by the legacy of Malabar traders like Chovvakkaran Moosa, who strengthened regional trade networks, and leaders such as Velu Thampi Dalawa, who stood for economic dignity during times of external influence, GAMA & CO 1498 carries forward a philosophy shaped by resilience, enterprise, and respect.
At its core, the belief remains simple — the finest spices in the world are not just grown, but earned through respect for the land and the people who nurture it.
A sustainable competitive edge is not built on momentary success or short-term efficiency. It is the ability to deliver unique, consistent value over time — in a way that cannot be easily copied, diluted, or replaced. At GAMA & CO, this edge is not defined by speed or scale, but by discipline, continuity, and a deep respect for origin.

The ship represents more than movement — it signifies direction, endurance, and mastery over long journeys. It reflects the historic Kerala spice route, where spices once travelled across oceans, connecting origin to destination with purpose and precision. For us, the ship is a reminder that true value lies not just in where something begins, but in how it is carried forward and delivered.

Our approach is rooted in understanding that origin, journey, and destination must all be treated with equal importance. Sourcing alone is not enough. The way spices are handled, preserved, transported, and delivered defines their final quality. We operate with a system that respects every stage — ensuring that what leaves the farm reaches the customer without losing its integrity.

This philosophy translates into disciplined execution. We follow origin-led sourcing practices, working closely with trusted growers to ensure consistency and authenticity. Our logistics are designed to protect quality at every step, minimizing exposure to conditions that can degrade aroma and flavour. Every process is intentional, structured, and built to safeguard both the product and the people behind it.

The result is a product that remains true to its source — spices that carry the depth, richness, and distinct character of Kerala while meeting the evolving expectations of global markets. Consistency builds reliability, and reliability builds lasting trust. Our customers receive not just authenticity, but dependable quality, carefully preserved and delivered with integrity across every batch, season after season.
At GAMA & CO, we see spices as more than ingredients — they are expressions of place, shaped by land, climate, people, and tradition. Each spice carries a story rooted in geography and time, long before it reaches the kitchen.
Spices have shaped trade and culture for centuries, yet at their core they remain pure — grown in harmony with nature, nurtured by farmers who understand that quality takes patience. To us, spices are heritage — preserved, respected, and shared in their most authentic form.
Our spices come from Kerala’s Western Ghats, a UNESCO-recognised region of rich biodiversity and ideal growing conditions. Altitude, rainfall, humidity, and fertile soil combine to produce spices of exceptional aroma and depth. Traditional farming methods, backed by generations of knowledge, protect the ecosystem while allowing each crop to develop its full character.
What reaches you is not just a spice, but a continuation of a legacy — shaped by nature, refined by tradition, and delivered with care.
We believe that truly exceptional spices are not created by scale or speed, but by respect — respect for the land that nurtures them, and for the people whose hands cultivate them with care and experience. This belief forms the foundation of everything we do at GAMA & CO.
That is why our approach goes beyond sourcing. It is a commitment to preserving a legacy.
• Responsible sourcing from trusted farmers
• Preserving natural aroma and purity
• Honouring traditional cultivation methods
• Delivering authentic spices to global kitchens
“In every seed sleeps a forest.” — Rumi
In Kerala, black pepper is not merely a spice. It is memory. It is ritual. It is life itself. It lives in the quiet rhythm of family kitchens, in the healing wisdom of traditional remedies, in the warmth of shared meals and celebrations. Its aroma is not just fragrance — it is identity.
I was born into that world.
As a child, I walked through gardens where pepper vines climbed patiently around towering trees, as though reaching for something beyond the sky. At the time, I did not understand what I was witnessing. It was simply home. But as I grew older, and as I studied history, that quiet familiarity transformed into something profound. Kerala was not just a place. It was once the center of the world. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, the spice trade shaped global economies, cultures and empires. In 1498, when Vasco da Gama arrived at Kozhikode, the world changed forever. What drew them here was not gold, nor land — but something far more powerful. Black pepper. Revered as “Black Gold,” it was valued for its ability to preserve, to heal, to transform. It travelled across oceans, carried by Arab traders, Chinese merchants and European explorers, building connections between distant civilizations.Kerala earned its name as the Spice Garden of the world — not by chance, but by nature, by knowledge, and by time. And yet, somewhere along the journey, something was lost.
Years later, when I moved to the United Kingdom to pursue my Master’s in Business, I began to miss home. But what I missed most was not just a place — it was a taste. The pepper I found there was different. The aroma felt distant. The flavour lacked depth. The strength — the very soul of it — was missing. It made me realise something simple, yet undeniable: The world had access to pepper. But not to the truth of it. As Henry David Thoreau once said,“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” And in that moment, I chose mine. I met my college mate, Hareesh — someone who shared not only my roots, but also my understanding of what had been lost. Together, we asked a question that would change everything: What if we could bring it back? Not just as a product. But as an experience. As a story. As a return to origin.
And so, GAMA & CO 1498 was born.
The name carries history — a year that marked the beginning of Kerala’s global spice legacy. But our purpose is forward-looking: to source exceptional, single-origin spices from the Western Ghats, preserve their integrity, and deliver them to the world with uncompromising quality. We do not see black pepper as a commodity. It is heritage. It is craftsmanship. It is Black Gold. Today, we begin with premium Malabar black pepper. Tomorrow, we build a house of spices — each one rooted in authenticity, traceability and respect for the land it comes from. Because, as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” From the gardens of Kerala to kitchens across the world, our journey is simple: To restore dignity to spices. To honour a legacy that shaped the world. To redefine what quality truly means. This is not just our story. It is the story of where we come from.
